What is SALT?
The connection between officer wellness, officer safety, organizational wellness, and community security is undeniable. Communities cannot be secure without officers to protect them. Officers cannot protect their communities if they are not well. Officers cannot stay well if their agency cultures are sick. SALT is a philosophy and approach designed to help agencies create an organizational culture of wellness that sustains their officers' individual wellness practices, improves officer safety, and supports community security.
Is traditional law enforcement training is failing our officers?

Traditional training programs are designed to keep officers safe through physical fitness, superior resources, and tactical strategies. However, repeated contacts with the toxins of evil during the daily practice of law enforcement have the potential to corrode officers' good nature and erode their capacity for noble performance. Officers must be intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, and physically fit so they can withstand these unrelenting encounters. Traditional training programs do not address all four components of wellness. Traditional training is failing our officers, our agencies, and our communities.
What's missing? As a profession, law enforcement has finely tuned the physical and intellectual training required to turn out successful officers. In recent decades, great strides have been made in terms of the emotional aspects, as well. Yet, without an underlying spiritual component, traditional curricula do not equip officers to manage and process the full range of human behavior they will encounter.

What's needed?
When asked about their motivation to join law enforcement, many officers around the globe parrot the acceptable mantra, “to protect and serve.” Rare are the officers who understand that they must first protect themselves before they can serve others. Such protection begins with understanding why the daily practice of law enforcement and order maintenance is intrinsically rewarding. Knowing why we practice informs who we are, what we do at any given moment, and how we make sense of the situations we encounter. Officers are humans who must be properly equipped to perform their sacred trust without being diminished by the evils they must face.

How can we do better?Fitness for optimal performance can be attained and maintained through multidimensional training and organizational wellness. Multidimensional training arms officers with the additional emotional, social, and spiritual capacity they need to respond creatively and intuitively in dynamic situations. Confronted with potential danger, officers who have cultivated this capacity have been shown to respond with quicker and more accurate intuition and more creative problem solving, which enhances the safety and security of everyone present. Organizational wellness empowers agencies to a sustain workplace spirituality that enables officers to tap into the restorative power of their calling to protect and serve.

Spirituality Activated Law Enforcement TrainingSpirituality Activated Law Enforcement Training (SALT) moves officers and agencies beyond the debilitating maladaptive behaviors that have been normalized in our culture toward a culture of wellness. Holistic wellness training will influence what officers do throughout their vocational lives, including when, where, and how they respond, investigate, and execute as well as how they make rational sense of irrational human carnage. SALT is the pathway beyond survival toward organizational wellness and community security.
